CITY OF BEACON CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF SOUTH AVENUE PARK REHABILITATION PROJECT
Beacon, NY— Today, Mayor Kyriacou was joined by Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D – Beacon), City Councilmembers, Recreation Director Mark Price, and members of the community for a ribbon-cutting event to mark the completion of the South Avenue Park Rehabilitation Project (the “Project”), which began in late May 2025. The $893,000 Project includes resurfacing and restriping of the existing basketball and tennis courts, replacement of deteriorated fencing, and relandscaping to remove failing retaining walls and regrade areas adjacent to the courts. The Project also features the first ever installation of a permanent public restroom at the Park, which has been decorated with a beautiful community-painted mural like the public restrooms at Memorial and Green Street Parks.
Mayor Lee Kyriacou noted, “Since taking office as Mayor in 2020, our Administration has put a high priority on improving the City’s aging recreation facilities and investing in critical recreation programs, both of which directly enhance the quality of life of our residents. We are grateful to Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson for helping us build further upon these efforts by obtaining critical funding support for this major improvement to South Avenue Park.”
Assemblymember Jacobson, who obtained $150,000 in State funding for the Project highlighted, “This park is so important to the residents of Beacon, and there are kids playing every time I come here. I’m excited to bring this special funding to Beacon, and the City always pulls together to make the most of any extra money I bring back from Albany. Congratulations to the City of Beacon on the successful and quick completion of this great project.”
Recreation Director Mark Price, who managed the successful project on behalf of the City said, “The last significant update to South Avenue Park was in the late-1990’s, so we’re excited to invest in this valuable community resource. The rehabilitated park will serve as a recreational hub for the neighborhood and City for decades to come.”
Mr. Price thanked the City Engineer, John Russo (of Lanc & Tully) and project engineers, Daniel Biggs and Mikala Kortright (of Weston & Sampson) for the design and oversight of the project. He also expressed appreciation for the contractors Consorti Brothers, WBE Fence, Scape-Tech Technologies, Musco Lighting, and the Public Restroom Company.
